A shocking stabbing spree in Southport, northwest England, left at least eight people, including children, injured on Monday afternoon. The attacker has been apprehended, and authorities have declared the incident a “major incident,” although they have assured the public there is no ongoing threat.
Merseyside Police quickly responded to the scene after reports emerged of a man “running around and stabbing people” in the Hart Street area. The suspect was arrested, and a knife was seized. The injured were transported to various hospitals, including Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. Due to the high number of casualties, Alder Hey has urged parents to bring their children only if absolutely necessary, as the hospital’s emergency services are currently at full capacity.
Local residents described the scene as chaotic and alarming. One shop owner remarked to The Guardian, “It is like a scene from a horror movie. Police have got him. It is like something from America, not like sunny Southport.” The attack occurred near a “Taylor Swift Yoga and Dance Workshop” for primary school children, adding to the distress of the local community.
As word of the attack spread, residents used WhatsApp groups to alert one another, advising them to lock their windows and doors to ensure their safety. The response from the community highlighted the immediate concern and fear that gripped Southport during the incident.
UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed her deep concern over the event in a statement on social media platform X, saying, “All my thoughts are with the families & loved ones of those affected. I have spoken to the Merseyside police & Crime Commissioner to convey full support to the police & thanks to the emergency services responding.”
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also condemned the attack, calling it “horrendous and deeply shocking” in a post on X. He added, “My thoughts are with all those affected. I would like to thank the police and emergency services for their swift response.”
