An Israeli military operation in and around Khan Younis, Gaza’s second-largest city, has resulted in approximately 300 fatalities since it commenced on July 22, according to Gaza’s civil defense agency. The operation, aimed at stopping rocket fire from the area, follows a period of intense conflict earlier in the year.
Mahmud Bassal, a spokesman for Gaza’s civil defense agency, reported on Tuesday that recovery efforts by civil defense and medical teams have unearthed the bodies of around 300 individuals, many in advanced stages of decomposition. This figure reflects the severe impact of the assault on the local population.
The Israeli military, which initiated the ground invasion to counter rocket attacks from Khan Younis, has reported different numbers. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that their operation, which focused on the eastern part of Khan Younis province, resulted in the “elimination” of over 150 individuals they identified as terrorists.
In addition, the IDF confirmed last week that they had recovered the bodies of five Israelis who were killed during Hamas attacks on October 7. These bodies were reportedly taken back to Gaza by the militants.
The recent escalation in Khan Younis underscores the ongoing volatility in the region, where clashes and military operations have continued throughout the year. The latest figures from Gaza’s civil defense highlight the heavy toll the conflict has taken on civilian lives in the area.
