In a remarkable demonstration of daring and precision, German slackliners Friedi Kuehne and Lukas Irmler have broken their own world record by walking a slackline suspended between two hot air balloons at an altitude of 2,500 meters (8,202 feet). The feat, documented in a viral video, showcases the athletes balancing above the clouds, captivating audiences worldwide.
Pushing Slacklining to New Heights
Kuehne and Irmler’s latest achievement eclipses their previous record of walking a slackline at 1,900 meters, set in Brazil in 2021. The record-breaking event was conducted under challenging conditions, including high-altitude winds and the unique demands of balancing at such extreme heights. Their slackline was anchored between two enormous hot air balloons, offering breathtaking views and immense risks.
“This is the craziest slackline world record Lukas and I have done together so far,” said Kuehne in a statement shared by Brut America on Instagram.
A History of Breaking Limits
Both athletes are renowned in the slacklining community for their record-setting accomplishments. In 2019, Lukas Irmler set the record for the longest distance walked on a slackline—an astonishing 2 kilometers. Friedi Kuehne has earned recognition for performing extreme slacklining stunts without safety equipment, including a 110-meter walk at a height of 250 meters in 2017.
The duo emphasized the difficulty of obtaining permission for such high-risk stunts, especially in Germany, where regulations are strict. Kuehne also shared his personal ambition to incorporate skydiving into a future slacklining event.
What is Slacklining?
Slacklining is an extreme sport that involves walking or balancing on a flat webbing line suspended between two points. Unlike traditional tightrope walking, slacklining requires a dynamic line that demands extraordinary balance, focus, and strength. Variations of the sport include highlining (at great heights), waterlining (over water), tricklining (performing stunts), and yoga slacklining.
A Landmark Achievement in Extreme Sports
The latest record by Kuehne and Irmler is a significant milestone for slacklining and extreme sports. Their breathtaking accomplishment has not only pushed the boundaries of human endurance but has also inspired a global audience to appreciate the art and bravery of slacklining.
