Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry Resigns Amid Political Transition Talks in Jamaica

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has announced his resignation from his position as head of the Caribbean nation, marking a significant development in the country’s ongoing political turmoil. The news of Henry’s resignation was confirmed by Irfaan Ali, the chair of the Caribbean Community and president of Guyana, who expressed gratitude for Henry’s service to Haiti.

Henry, a 74-year-old neurosurgeon, had assumed the role of Prime Minister in 2021. His resignation comes amidst discussions among regional leaders in nearby Jamaica regarding the framework for a political transition in Haiti. The United States had urged for an expedited transition process, while Haitian gangs called for Henry’s resignation.

The decision to step down follows Henry’s recent trip to Kenya to secure leadership for a United Nations-backed international security mission aimed at combating armed gangs in Haiti. However, escalating violence in the capital city of Port-au-Prince during his absence left him stranded in Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory.

Efforts to establish a transitional presidential council and appoint an interim prime minister have been underway, with regional officials engaging in talks involving various stakeholders from Haiti’s political parties, private sector, civil society, and religious groups. The objective is to facilitate a smooth transition and pave the way for the country’s first elections since 2016.

Henry’s tenure as Prime Minister has been marred by allegations of corruption, and his repeated postponement of elections citing security concerns has drawn criticism from many Haitians. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the need for the creation of a broad-based, inclusive, and independent presidential college to address the immediate needs of the Haitian people, ensure the deployment of the security mission, and create conducive conditions for free and fair elections.

As Haiti navigates through this critical phase of transition, the resignation of Ariel Henry marks a significant turning point in the country’s political landscape. The coming days will be crucial as stakeholders work towards establishing a transitional government and charting a path towards stability and democratic governance.
