Lebanon’s armed group Hezbollah has escalated tensions in the region with a series of drone and rocket attacks targeting northern Israel. The attacks, which occurred on Tuesday, involved a swarm of drones aimed at military sites near Acre, as well as an assault on an Israeli military vehicle.
The Israeli military confirmed that several drones crossed from Lebanon, with one being intercepted. Several civilians were injured south of the coastal city of Nahariya, where one impact site was reported near a bus stop. The military also reported false alarm sirens around Acre but noted that its air force retaliated by striking two Hezbollah facilities in southern Lebanon.
The escalation follows Hezbollah’s vow of retaliation for the recent killing of its top commander, Fuad Shukr, by Israeli forces. Hezbollah sources have indicated that this wave of attacks is not yet the full measure of their response.
The situation remains volatile as fears grow of a broader conflict in the Middle East. Earlier on Tuesday, a separate strike on a home in the Lebanese town of Mayfadoun resulted in the deaths of four individuals, reportedly Hezbollah fighters. This follows a pattern of increased exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and the Israeli military over the past ten months, coinciding with the ongoing Gaza conflict.
