Imran Khan Claims 'Inhumane' Treatment in Jail, Describes Conditions as 'Death Cell'

In a rare interview conducted from behind bars, former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has made shocking allegations about his treatment in jail, describing his conditions as “inhumane” and likening his confinement to that of a “terrorist.” The 71-year-old founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party shared his grievances in a conversation with British publication The Sunday Times, as reported by Dawn.

Khan, currently imprisoned in the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, claimed that he is being held in a 7ft by 8ft “death cell,” a space typically reserved for terrorists to prevent contact with the outside world. He described the cell as solitary confinement with minimal space and constant surveillance. According to Khan, he is being recorded 24/7 and is deprived of basic prisoner rights, including visitation.

The former cricketer-turned-politician has been incarcerated for almost a year following convictions in multiple cases, including the Toshakhana corruption case, the cipher case, and the un-Islamic marriage case. Despite securing bail or having some convictions set aside, Khan remains behind bars due to ongoing legal battles. His wife, Bushra Bibi, is also imprisoned, facing charges alongside him.

Khan’s claims about his imprisonment have been met with skepticism from authorities. Information Minister Atta Tarar dismissed the allegations, stating that Khan enjoys “presidential suites” at Adiala Jail, which include access to a gym, kitchen, walking gallery, and luxurious meals. Tarar emphasized that Khan’s conditions are far from those experienced by past political prisoners.

Adding to the controversy, Bushra Bibi has voiced serious concerns about her husband’s safety. She alleged that Imran Khan is being subjected to inhumane conditions and is being served contaminated food. Bushra has also highlighted past incidents where Khan was reportedly poisoned and shot at, raising fears for his safety.

Imran Khan was initially arrested on August 5, 2023, following his conviction in the Toshakhana corruption case filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan. Despite some legal reprieves, including the court’s decision to set aside his conviction in the Iddat (un-Islamic marriage) case earlier this month, Khan remains in custody due to other pending cases.
