Tehran has vowed to take action against Britain, France, and Germany following the announcement of fresh sanctions over claims that Iran has supplied short-range missiles to Russia for use in the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
In a statement issued late Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani condemned the sanctions as part of a “hostile policy” and “economic terrorism” aimed at Iran. He warned that the Islamic Republic would take “appropriate and proportionate” action in response to the European measures.
The sanctions come after the three European nations said they would work to cancel air services agreements with Iran and impose restrictions on Iran Air. Additionally, they announced plans to target significant entities and individuals involved in Iran’s ballistic missile program and its alleged transfer of missiles and other weapons to Russia.
Despite these allegations, Iran has repeatedly denied providing weapons to Russia for use in Ukraine. “Any claim that the Islamic Republic of Iran has sold ballistic missiles to the Russian Federation is completely baseless and false,” Kanani stated.
Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken asserted that Russia had received shipments of ballistic missiles from Iran, which could be deployed in Ukraine within weeks. He added that Russian military personnel had been trained in Iran to operate the Fath-360 missile system, a weapon with a range of 120 kilometers (75 miles).
As tensions rise over Iran’s alleged involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war, the international community continues to monitor the situation closely, with further sanctions and diplomatic fallout possible in the near future.
