The Israeli military announced on Sunday that it had carried out a series of airstrikes targeting over 100 “terrorist” sites in the Gaza Strip over the past two days, with several Hamas militants reportedly killed. The air raids were focused on locations from which Palestinian militants had launched projectiles into Israel in recent days.
According to a statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the air force’s strikes resulted in the elimination of dozens of Hamas “terrorists.” The operation comes amid ongoing conflict between Israeli forces and militants in Gaza, which has led to mounting casualties on both sides. On Saturday, Gaza’s civil defense agency reported that more than 30 individuals were killed in Israeli airstrikes.
The escalation in violence follows increased rocket fire from Gaza, which has reignited air raid sirens in Israeli communities, many of which were heavily damaged during the devastating Hamas attack in October 2023. While rocket launches from Gaza have decreased compared to the early stages of the war, there has been a recent surge in attacks by militants from the Palestinian territory.
The renewed violence coincides with indirect negotiations underway in Qatar aimed at securing a ceasefire and the release of hostages still held in Gaza. Qatar, Egypt, and the United States have been mediating talks for months in hopes of bringing an end to the nearly 15-month-long conflict.
Despite the ongoing efforts for a peaceful resolution, the fighting continues, with Israel warning of further strikes if the rocket attacks from Gaza persist. The Israeli government has maintained its stance on targeting militant groups operating within Gaza, while the humanitarian toll in the Palestinian territory continues to rise.
