Jaishankar Meets Blinken in Tokyo Ahead of Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Tokyo on Sunday, setting the stage for the upcoming Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting. The two leaders engaged in discussions on a broad spectrum of regional, global issues, and bilateral relations during their encounter, which occurred on the sidelines of the Quad gathering.

Jaishankar, who arrived in Japan on Sunday for the two-day Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting, shared his impressions of the meeting on social media. He described the discussion with Blinken as an opportunity to “catch up” and noted that progress on their bilateral agenda was “steady.” Jaishankar expressed anticipation for the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting, stating, “Look forward to attending the Quad FMM tomorrow,” in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The Quad, or Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, is a strategic partnership comprising Australia, India, Japan, and the United States. Established in November 2017, it aims to ensure that critical sea routes in the Indo-Pacific remain free from external influences and to develop a cohesive strategy among member nations.

During his visit, Jaishankar was welcomed by India’s Ambassador to Japan and the Republic of Marshall Islands, Sibi George. Earlier in the day, Jaishankar participated in the unveiling of a bust of Mahatma Gandhi at Freedom Plaza in Edogawa, Tokyo. The ceremony, attended by Edogawa Mayor Takeshi Saito and other dignitaries, included a performance by schoolchildren singing Gandhi’s favorite prayer, “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram.”

Addressing the Indian diaspora at the event, Jaishankar hailed Gandhi as a “global icon” and emphasized the enduring relevance of his teachings. He reflected on the significance of Gandhi’s contributions, stating, “The achievements of Gandhi have far outlived his times… What he taught us was important then as well as now.”

Jaishankar also remarked on the broader impact of Indian independence, suggesting that it marked the beginning of global decolonization. “Indian independence was the beginning of a very momentous event,” he said, noting that the decolonization of Asia, Africa, and Latin America followed. He concluded by linking Gandhi’s legacy to the contemporary global landscape, where India’s emergence as a major economic power and the shift from the G7 to the G20 reflect the changes initiated by Gandhi’s actions.

The Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting is set to further discussions on security and strategic issues affecting the Indo-Pacific region, with Jaishankar and Blinken playing pivotal roles in shaping the dialogue and collaboration among the member countries.
