Following the seizure of an Israel-linked cargo ship by Iran and concerns over the conditions of the 17 Indian crew members onboard, India has successfully negotiated with Iran for Indian government officials to meet the detained crew. The assurance was conveyed by the Iranian foreign ministry after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reached out to his Iranian counterpart Amir Abdollahian expressing India’s concerns.
In a statement, the Iranian foreign ministry stated that Jaishankar had requested assistance regarding the detained crew. “Dr. Amir Abdollahian confirmed that we are actively pursuing the details of the seized ship, and soon, representatives of the Indian government will be permitted to meet with the crew,” the statement read.
India has been in continuous communication with Iran since the ship’s capture on Saturday, seeking the prompt release of its crew members. Jaishankar, in his discussions, emphasized the need to de-escalate tensions and exercise restraint amid rising hostilities between Israel and Iran.
“Spoke to Iranian FM @Amirabdolahian this evening. Took up the release of 17 Indian crew members of MSC Aries. Discussed the current situation in the region. Stressed the importance of avoiding escalation, exercising restraint and returning to diplomacy. Agreed to remain in touch,” Jaishankar stated in a social media post.
The recent escalation between Israel and Iran, marked by Iranian attacks on Israel, has raised concerns globally. India has called for immediate de-escalation, emphasizing the importance of diplomacy and peaceful resolution to the ongoing tensions. The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated India’s stance, urging all parties to step back from violence and prioritize diplomatic channels.
India has also alerted its embassies in the region to stay vigilant and maintain close contact with the Indian community amidst the escalating hostilities. The successful negotiation for officials to meet the detained crew reflects India’s proactive diplomatic efforts in safeguarding its citizens’ interests in challenging situations.
