Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International and former CEO of Prudential Plc, has tragically died at the age of 70. Bloomer was confirmed among the fatalities in the sinking of the luxury yacht Bayesian off the coast of Italy on August 19. His wife, Judy Bloomer, was also killed in the incident. The couple was on board the superyacht to celebrate the acquittal of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, for whom Bloomer had testified as a defense witness.
The yacht was struck by a tornado near Porticello, Sicily, leading to the death of six people who were likely trapped inside. The Bloomers’ children have issued a statement expressing their profound grief and requesting privacy during this difficult time. They described their parents as “incredible people” who deeply cherished their family and new grandchildren.
Jonathan Bloomer had been serving as the chairman of Morgan Stanley’s European business since 2018 and was also appointed to lead the board of British insurer Hiscox Ltd. last year. Morgan Stanley CEO Ted Pick lauded Bloomer’s leadership, which he said was crucial during a period of significant change for the firm’s international operations. Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain honored Bloomer’s contributions, noting the privilege of working with him.
Bloomer’s career spanned several high-profile roles. Before joining Morgan Stanley, he was a partner at Arthur Andersen for 20 years and held senior positions at Prudential Plc from 1995 to 2005. He left Prudential following disagreements over a rights offering but continued to have a notable career, serving as an operating partner at Cerberus Capital Management LP from 2006 to 2012 and later leading the boards of Arrow Global Group Ltd. and DWF Group Ltd.
