In a tragic and chilling case, a man in the United States has been sentenced to life in prison for tracking his ex-girlfriend’s location on a social media app and then murdering her when she returned home. Aldrick Scott was found guilty of first-degree murder in March, over a year after the disappearance of his former girlfriend, Cari Allen.
The grim events unfolded in November 2022 when Cari Allen, 43, was on a date at a restaurant. Using Snapchat’s location feature, Scott tracked her whereabouts and drove from Topeka, Kansas, to Nebraska, where he lay in wait at her home. Upon her arrival, he fatally shot her before fleeing the country.
The prosecution argued that Scott’s actions stemmed from his inability to accept the breakup and his desire for control over Allen. “It’s that typical thing with regard to domestic violence, cases of control, and if I don’t have control or if I can’t have you, no one will,” said Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine.
Following a manhunt, Scott was eventually apprehended in Belize. Allen’s body was discovered in a shallow grave, underscoring the brutality of the crime and the devastating impact on her loved ones.
During sentencing, the judge condemned Scott’s actions as “senseless and tragic,” noting the overwhelming evidence against him. Despite the severity of the crime, Scott showed no remorse or emotion throughout the trial and sentencing.
The defence claimed that Scott acted in self-defence during a confrontation with Allen at her home, but prosecutors argued that his actions were premeditated and driven by obsession. The judge’s ruling reflects the gravity of the crime and the need for justice in cases of domestic violence and control.
