Netanyahu at UNGA: India as a "Blessing" and Iran as a "Curse"

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a stark message during his address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday, presenting two contrasting maps that symbolize his country’s geopolitical stance. One map, labeled “Blessing,” showcased Israel’s vision of unity with its Arab partners and a potential land bridge connecting Asia and Europe through the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. In contrast, the second map, described as a “Curse,” illustrated what Netanyahu termed as an “arc of terror” that Iran has created, extending from the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean.

The maps served as a backdrop to Netanyahu’s broader appeal for global support against Iran, urging nations to impose sanctions and collaborate with Israel to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. He criticized what he called a long history of international appeasement towards Iran, saying, “For too long the world has appeased Iran, turning a blind eye to its internal repression and external aggression. That appeasement must end now.”

In his speech, Netanyahu emphasized the threats posed by Iran, particularly its support for militant groups such as Hezbollah. He issued a stern warning to Iran, stating, “If you strike us, we will strike you. There is no place in Iran where the long arm of Israel cannot reach. And that is true for the entire Middle East.”

The tensions between Israel and Iran have escalated recently, especially following the assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in July. Iran has condemned Israeli military actions, particularly in Lebanon, labeling them as “flagrant war crimes.”

Netanyahu’s address underscores Israel’s ongoing efforts to galvanize international support against Iran’s perceived threats while seeking to strengthen alliances with countries like India, which he portrayed as a vital partner in a collective security framework.
