In a bid to bolster its counter-terrorism efforts, Pakistan has formally requested small arms and modern equipment from the United States to support its newly launched initiative, Operation Azm-i-Istehkam. This initiative, approved recently by Pakistan’s federal government, aims to intensify efforts against terrorism within the country, following a resurgence of militant activities primarily attributed to the Tehreek-i-Taliban.
Ambassador Masood Khan, Pakistan’s envoy to the US, emphasized the necessity of sophisticated small arms and communication gear during his address at the Wilson Centre in Washington. He outlined the comprehensive strategy of Operation Azm-i-Istehkam, comprising doctrinal, societal, and operational components. While the initial phases are already underway, the third phase is slated for imminent implementation.
The decision to launch this new anti-terror operation was precipitated by mounting challenges posed by Tehreek-i-Taliban militants allegedly based in neighboring Afghanistan. Ambassador Khan stressed the criticality of strong security ties and intelligence cooperation between Pakistan and the US, underscoring the importance of resuming sales of advanced military platforms and maintaining US-origin defense equipment.
“Regional security hinges upon our joint efforts against the rising tide of terrorism, which threatens both Pakistani and American interests,” Ambassador Khan asserted, advocating for a pragmatic approach to bilateral relations that transcends occasional disagreements.
Acknowledging Pakistan’s role as a strategic partner, the US State Department expressed solidarity with Pakistan’s counter-terrorism endeavors. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller affirmed, “We support Pakistan’s efforts to combat terrorism and ensure the safety of its citizens, emphasizing the importance of upholding human rights and the rule of law.”
The diplomatic exchanges underscored ongoing defense cooperation through joint military exercises and high-level dialogues, highlighting initiatives such as Inspired Union-2024 and Falcon Talon. Ambassador Khan also proposed deeper collaboration on diplomatic efforts in Kabul and initiatives promoting women’s rights in Afghanistan.
As both nations navigate complex geopolitical landscapes, Ambassador Khan urged a steadfast focus on mutual interests and pragmatic engagement, urging against allowing isolated issues to derail broader bilateral relations. The call for enhanced cooperation comes amidst evolving regional dynamics, prompting renewed calls for strategic alignment and shared security objectives.
