PhD Student Travels Across China for 134 Days Without a Phone, Shares His Unique Experience

In an era where smartphones have become integral to daily life, a PhD student in China has taken a remarkable step to disconnect from the digital world. Yang Hao, a PhD student from Taiyuan in Shanxi province, embarked on a 134-day journey across China without using a mobile phone or computer, relying solely on two internet-free cameras to document his experiences.

Starting his adventure in November, Hao traveled through 24 provinces and regions, experiencing the challenges and rewards of living without modern technology. The South China Morning Post reported on Hao’s journey, highlighting the difficulties he faced in navigating simple tasks like booking hotels and hailing taxis without a phone. He had to depend on traditional methods, often leading to frustrating encounters as many businesses lacked card payment facilities, forcing him to find ATMs for cash withdrawals.

Despite these challenges, Hao’s technology-free adventure provided unexpected benefits. Without the constant barrage of notifications and social media distractions, he found himself immersed in more meaningful activities such as reading, writing, and self-reflection. His journey allowed him to explore and appreciate aspects of life that are often overshadowed by digital connectivity.

Hao recounted his experience, saying, “I feel that the mobile phone is like a digital organ for us. We cannot do many things without one. So I wanted to explore what happens if we have no internet access at all. What’s the experience like, say, for several months?” He described his journey as a profound life experience, likening himself to “an ancient man who has time-travelled to the modern day.”

The public reaction to his phone-free expedition was varied. Many were astonished by his decision, with some questioning whether he was engaged in illicit activities or undertaking a special project. Others were intrigued by his choice to live without a mobile phone.

Hao’s digital detox was not just a personal experiment but also tied to his academic research on the impact of digitalisation on human lives. He plans to compile his experiences into a book and is working on a documentary featuring footage from his journey. His story serves as a reminder of the profound impact that technology has on our lives and the value of taking a step back to reconnect with the world in a more traditional manner.
