Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the victims of a devastating fire that engulfed a shopping mall in Dhaka, Bangladesh, claiming the lives of at least 46 individuals. In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, PM Modi also conveyed his wishes for the swift recovery of those injured in the tragic incident.
The fire, which erupted at a shopping mall in Dhaka’s capital, resulted in a tragic loss of lives and left over 20 others severely injured. Firefighters heroically rescued 70 individuals, including 42 found unconscious, from the rooftop and various floors of the seven-storey Green Cozy Cottage.
The blaze, which began at around 9:50 pm on Thursday, originated from a restaurant named “Kacchi Bhai” situated on the first floor of the building. Rapidly spreading to the upper floors, which housed additional restaurants and a garment shop, the fire created a harrowing situation for those caught within the premises.
“In a letter addressed to Hon’ble PM Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi expressed his heartfelt condolences on the loss of lives in the fire at the Green Cozy Cottage Shopping Mall in Dhaka on 29 February 2024. He also wished speedy recovery to those injured,” stated the Indian mission in Bangladesh.
PM Modi reiterated India’s solidarity with Bangladesh during this time of immense grief, affirming that the thoughts and prayers of the Indian people are with their Bangladeshi counterparts.
Meanwhile, authorities in Bangladesh have taken swift action in response to the tragedy, with a case filed by police on Friday night and the subsequent arrest of three individuals allegedly connected to the incident.
As investigations into the cause of the fire continue, both nations mourn the loss of lives and stand in solidarity with the affected families. The tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of ensuring safety measures in public spaces to prevent such catastrophic events in the future.
