PM Modi Offers Condolences to Japan After Devastating Earthquake Claims Lives

In the aftermath of a powerful earthquake that struck Japan, claiming nearly 100 lives and displacing thousands, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

Expressing profound sympathy for the families who lost their loved ones, PM Modi assured Japan of India’s unwavering support during this difficult time. “We stand in solidarity with Japan and its people affected by the disaster,” Modi affirmed. Emphasizing the significance of the relationship between India and Japan as special strategic partners, he pledged India’s readiness to provide any possible assistance.

The seismic event, registering a magnitude of 7.5, shook the Noto Peninsula and its surrounding areas in central Japan on Monday. The aftermath rendered several regions inaccessible, impeding crucial search and rescue operations. As of the latest reports, the catastrophe has claimed at least 94 lives, displaced around 33,000 individuals from their homes, and left over 200 people unaccounted for, according to Reuters.

The impact of the earthquake has been particularly severe, with debris and severed roads hindering swift access to affected areas. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida addressed the difficulties faced in the northern part of the remote Noto Peninsula, emphasizing the challenges posed by damaged roadways that restricted movement.

In Ishikawa Prefecture’s Wajima City, structural damage and fires wreaked havoc, with reports of 25 collapsed buildings, including residential homes. Additionally, in the bustling tourist hub of Asaichi Street, around 200 buildings, comprising shops and residences, were reportedly engulfed in flames.

The United States Geological Survey revealed that the earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula at approximately 4:10 pm local time, reaching a depth of 10 kilometers.

In a display of international solidarity, the United States announced its preparedness to extend military and logistical support to heavily impacted areas in Japan.

Amidst this tragedy, the global community stands united in offering assistance and aid to alleviate the distress caused by this devastating earthquake. As rescue efforts continue and affected areas grapple with the aftermath, collaborative support remains crucial in aiding Japan’s recovery from this calamity.
