UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak Faces Plummeting Approval Ratings Amid Policy Challenges

Rishi Sunak, the UK’s prime minister, finds himself grappling with a significant decline in his public approval, as revealed by a recent YouGov survey. The poll paints a concerning picture, indicating that 70% of respondents hold an unfavorable opinion of Sunak, while only 21% view him favorably, resulting in a net favorability rating of minus 49, a stark 10-point drop since late November. This represents Sunak’s lowest recorded rating since assuming office in October the previous year.

The survey highlights a stark sentiment shift, with a majority of 2019 Tory voters, comprising 56%, expressing a negative view of Sunak, while 40% hold a positive opinion. Although comparable to Boris Johnson’s ratings during his final months in office, Sunak’s figures exceed those of Liz Truss.

Amidst these declining ratings, Sunak’s Conservative party faces multiple challenges, with the opposition Labour Party leading in the polls. One significant controversy surrounds Sunak’s flagship policy aimed at deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda, prompting internal discord within the Conservative Party.

Tory MP Philip Davies emphasized the party’s unified stance in curbing illegal immigration, asserting consensus on the notion of halting illegal immigration and supporting the deportation policy to a third country like Rwanda. However, while acknowledging this shared objective, he hinted at diverse opinions within the party regarding the efficacy and potential enhancements of the proposed Bill.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper echoed the sentiment, stating Sunak’s willingness to listen to Conservative MPs regarding potential amendments to the Rwanda Bill. Harper underscored the party’s collective intent to address immigration concerns while ensuring compliance with international law and Rwanda’s expectations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining Rwanda’s cooperation.

The plummeting approval ratings for Sunak coincide with a crucial phase for his leadership, marked by policy challenges and internal disputes within the Conservative Party. As discussions continue regarding the deportation policy and its amendments, Sunak’s ability to navigate these complexities while regaining public confidence remains a critical focal point in the political landscape of the UK.
