Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s recent phone call with former U.S. President Donald Trump has gone viral after the video was shared widely on social media. The conversation took place shortly after Prabowo’s arrival in Washington for an official visit, which includes a meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden.
The phone call, made on Monday, was posted by Prabowo on his social media platforms. In the video, Prabowo congratulates Trump on his election victory, offering to fly anywhere to personally congratulate him. “Wherever you are, I’m willing to fly to congratulate you personally, sir,” Prabowo says in the clip. Trump responds warmly, “We’ll do that, anytime you want.”
The call was made after Prabowo arrived from China, where he had met with President Xi Jinping. His trip to the U.S. marks his first official visit since taking office. During the conversation, Trump expressed his pride in his electoral success, calling it “the most successful in over 100 years” and described the victory as a “big mandate.”
The two leaders also exchanged pleasantries about Prabowo’s English language skills, with Trump praising him and Prabowo replying, “All my training is American, sir.” In a more serious moment, Prabowo expressed his shock over the assassination attempt on Trump during the 2016 campaign, expressing relief that Trump had survived. Trump responded modestly, “Yes, I got very lucky. I just happened to be in the right place with the right direction, otherwise I wouldn’t be talking to you right now.”
Prabowo, a former special forces commander, also used the visit to meet with U.S. company representatives, including from Freeport McMoRan and Chevron. He urged these companies to invest in Indonesia, highlighting the country’s economic potential.
While the viral video showcases a cordial interaction between the two leaders, it also provides insight into Prabowo’s diplomatic efforts as he continues to strengthen ties with the U.S. while pursuing a non-aligned foreign policy. The content of the call has sparked a great deal of interest across social media platforms, with many praising the candid and friendly exchange between the Indonesian leader and Trump.
