Pro-Palestine protests at universities across the United States have intensified, resulting in over 100 arrests amid escalating tensions over the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The University of Southern California (USC) witnessed significant demonstrations, with 93 individuals arrested on suspicion of trespassing during Wednesday’s protests, as reported by CNN. The USC Department of Public Safety issued warnings to protesters at Alumni Park, instructing them to disperse or face arrest for trespassing.
Los Angeles Police Captain Kelly Muniz highlighted the private nature of the university campus and the violation of directives by the protesters, leading to law enforcement’s intervention and arrests.
In addition to trespassing charges, one individual was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among protesters or law enforcement officers.
Tensions at USC escalated when protesters refused to comply with orders to relocate and remove prohibited items, prompting the university to close its campus as LAPD initiated arrests.
The demonstrations echo sentiments expressed at Columbia University, where calls for severing ties with Israeli academic institutions and divesting from entities linked to Israel have fueled ongoing protests. House Speaker Mike Johnson urged the resignation of Columbia University’s president, emphasizing the need for order on campus amidst the pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
Meanwhile, similar protests at the University of Texas in Austin led to over 30 arrests, reflecting the widespread impact and fervor of the pro-Palestine movement on US campuses.
