A report from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that twelve pro-Iranian fighters were killed in air strikes of unknown origin in eastern Syria on Sunday. The strikes targeted positions in the city of Deir Ezzor, the surrounding areas, and the Boukamal region, located near the Iraqi border.
According to the Observatory, the attacks resulted in a significant number of injuries among the fighters. While five of the strikes specifically targeted military positions close to Deir Ezzor airport, the identity of the perpetrators remains unclaimed, leaving the origins of the strikes uncertain.
Iran has been a vital ally of the Syrian government, providing military support since the onset of the Syrian civil war in 2011. Meanwhile, Israel has conducted numerous strikes aimed at pro-Iranian groups operating within Syria, maintaining a strategy to counter Iran’s influence in the region. The United States has also been involved in targeting these groups in eastern Syria.
Though Israeli authorities typically refrain from commenting on individual air strikes in Syria, they have consistently emphasized their commitment to preventing Iran from expanding its military presence near its borders.
In recent days, Israel has escalated its military campaign against Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon, further heightening concerns about the potential for a broader regional conflict. The Israeli Defense Forces have also targeted arms supply routes utilized by Hezbollah along the Syrian-Lebanese border, reflecting ongoing tensions in the area.
