Zelenskiy Arrives in New York for U.N. General Assembly Amid New Military Aid Package for Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has arrived in New York to participate in the U.N. General Assembly sessions, as reported by the Ukrinform state news agency. His visit comes at a critical juncture, with the U.S. preparing a significant $375 million military aid package for Ukraine, marking a shift from recent smaller assistance efforts aimed at bolstering Kyiv’s military operations against Russia.

During his time in New York, Zelenskiy is set to present a “victory plan” for Ukraine’s ongoing war to U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in separate meetings scheduled for Thursday. This plan aims to outline strategies for advancing Ukraine’s defense and recovery efforts amid heightened military challenges.

Zelenskiy also expressed interest in meeting with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has previously criticized U.S. aid to Ukraine, labeling it a waste of resources. Although Trump indicated that he would likely meet with Zelenskiy this week, no specific date has been confirmed. Trump faces off against Harris in the upcoming Nov. 5 U.S. election, adding another layer of political significance to the discussions.

The Ukrainian President has consistently raised concerns over weapon shortages, particularly regarding critical 155-millimeter artillery shells, which are essential for the country’s defense. The urgency of these needs has intensified as Russia escalates attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in preparation for the winter months.

According to U.S. officials, the anticipated aid package is expected to include a variety of military resources, such as patrol boats, additional ammunition for high-mobility artillery rocket systems, as well as 155- and 105-millimeter artillery ammunition, spare parts, and other necessary equipment.
