Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his willingness to engage in direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the ongoing war between the two nations. Speaking in an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan, Zelensky stated that he would consider the possibility if it were the only way to bring peace to Ukraine.
“If that is the only set-up in which we can bring peace to the citizens of Ukraine and not lose people, definitely we will go for this set-up,” Zelensky said in the interview, which was posted on YouTube on Tuesday. However, he emphasized that he would also require the presence of other “participants” in the discussions.
The comments come amid the third year of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022. Despite multiple international efforts to broker peace, the conflict has continued, causing significant casualties and destruction.
Zelensky’s willingness to engage in direct talks with Putin signals a potential shift in approach, as previous attempts at negotiations have mostly involved mediators from Western nations and international organizations.
As of now, there has been no official response from the Kremlin regarding Zelensky’s statement. Meanwhile, the war continues to be a focal point in global geopolitics, with Ukraine receiving ongoing support from Western allies, including military aid and economic assistance.
It remains to be seen whether direct talks between Zelensky and Putin could materialize and lead to a resolution of the war.
