In a tragic turn of events, a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore faced severe turbulence, resulting in the death of one passenger and injuries to 30 others. The incident occurred aboard flight SQ321, a Boeing 777-300 ER, which departed from Heathrow Airport in London on Monday.
According to reports, the turbulence struck unexpectedly during the journey, prompting the pilot to make an emergency landing at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport on Tuesday afternoon. The aircraft, carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members, landed safely at 3.45 pm (local time).
Singapore Airlines released a statement expressing condolences to the deceased passenger’s family and confirming the injuries and fatality on board. The airline stated, “Our priority is to provide all possible assistance to all passengers and crew on board the aircraft. We are working closely with local authorities in Thailand to offer necessary medical support and have dispatched a team to Bangkok for additional assistance.”
Experts have highlighted that such turbulence-related injuries often occur when passengers are not securely fastened with seatbelts, and pilots may not receive sufficient warning from weather radar about impending turbulence. This can lead to passengers being thrown around inside the cabin, resulting in injuries.
This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of in-flight turbulence and underscores the importance of following safety protocols, including wearing seatbelts throughout the flight. Authorities are conducting further investigations into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
