“Jake Kassan, Multi-Millionaire Founder, Shares His Battle with Anxiety and Depression After Selling His Company for $100 Million”

    -

Jake Kassan, a 33-year-old entrepreneur and former founder of the successful accessory brand MVMT Watches, has opened up about the unexpected mental health struggles he faced after selling his company for $100 million in 2018. Despite achieving his goal of financial freedom, Kassan found himself grappling with anxiety, panic attacks, and a sense of emptiness that money couldn’t fill.

Kassan, who dropped out of college to start MVMT Watches, grew the company into a prominent brand before selling it to the Movado Group for a life-changing sum. For years, he worked tirelessly toward the goal of financial independence, believing that it would bring him happiness and fulfillment. However, after the sale, Kassan’s outlook began to shift. He realized that the achievement he had worked so hard for didn’t bring him the satisfaction he expected.

In an interview with CNBC Make It, Kassan explained, “The North Star when I was younger was always financial freedom. So my purpose, I always felt, was: I wanted to make money.” But after the sale, he found himself unable to identify a new purpose, leading to emotional struggles.

“I think I lost my purpose. For the first time in years, I couldn’t find anything that felt as important as that entrepreneurial journey,” Kassan admitted. His battles with anxiety and panic attacks intensified, and he began feeling a void inside that couldn’t be filled with wealth.

Kassan described a deep sense of loneliness and emotional depletion after turning 30, despite having friends and success. “I finally climbed to the top of my mountain, but I didn’t find what I was looking for,” he said in a YouTube video. “How do you empathize with someone who is rich and depressed?”

Despite these challenges, Kassan has found new directions in his life. He is currently focusing on growing his YouTube channel and working as an angel investor for various companies. Reflecting on his relationship with money, he emphasized that wealth, while appreciated, cannot buy happiness or peace of mind.

“I can’t buy more peace of mind. That’s my relationship with money. I’m grateful for it. I appreciate it. I’d rather have it than not have it… but there’s nothing that it can do that is going to make me a happier person,” he shared.

Kassan’s story serves as a reminder that success and wealth don’t necessarily equate to happiness, and that finding purpose and fulfillment in life is an ongoing journey.
