A United Airlines flight experienced a terrifying moment on Sunday when flames erupted from one of the plane’s wings while it was taxiing for takeoff at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. The incident led to an immediate evacuation of the aircraft, though fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The plane, which was set to depart for New York, had 104 passengers and five crew members aboard. As the flames burst from the wing, panic quickly spread among the passengers. One of them recorded a harrowing video, capturing the sounds of people screaming for help, with a voice pleading, “Please, please, please, get us out of here.”
The Houston Fire Department (HFD) responded quickly to the emergency. The department’s Airport Rescue Firefighters assisted in evacuating the plane and confirmed that no injuries occurred during the incident. They posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “HFD assisted in deboarding the plane. No injuries have been reported at this time.”
The authorities have yet to release further details regarding the cause of the fire, and investigations are underway.
This incident comes on the heels of a series of alarming aviation events. Just days before, a deadly plane crash near a mall in Philadelphia killed seven people and injured 19 others. Additionally, a collision between an American Airlines plane and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter near Washington’s Reagan National Airport left all 67 people aboard both aircraft feared dead after both planes crashed into the Potomac River.
As investigations continue into these recent accidents, air safety remains a significant concern, with passengers and officials alike hoping for swift resolutions and improvements in aviation safety protocols.
