Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi has strongly condemned the recent attack on Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Copenhagen. The incident, which occurred at Kultorvet Square during the ongoing EU parliamentary elections in Denmark, has raised concerns over the safety of political figures in Europe.
In a statement posted on X, Modi expressed his deep concern, stating, “Deeply concerned by the news of the attack on Mette Frederiksen, Denmark’s Prime Minister. We condemn the attack. Wishing good health to my friend.” Details surrounding the assault remain unclear, but reports indicate that Frederiksen was forcefully approached and pushed by a man while passing through the central piazza.
While Frederiksen suffered minor whiplash from the incident, her office confirmed that she is otherwise fine. A 39-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the attack and is set to appear in a pre-trial custody hearing.
Several international leaders have also condemned the assault. French President Emmanuel Macron termed the attack “unacceptable” and wished Frederiksen a speedy recovery. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg expressed shock and referred to Frederiksen as a friend, while European Council President Charles Michel condemned the incident as a “cowardly act of aggression.”
The attack on Frederiksen is part of a series of recent violent incidents involving European political figures. Just days ago, Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico was seriously injured in an assassination attempt. These incidents have raised concerns about the safety and security of political leaders during election campaigns and public appearances.
The assault on Frederiksen comes amidst the EU parliamentary elections, where she has been campaigning with the Social Democrats’ EU lead candidate, Christel Schaldemose. However, it is noted that the attack does not appear to be directly linked to any campaign event.
