In response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Turkey has announced trade restrictions on Israel, effective immediately. This decision, made by Turkey’s trade ministry and approved by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, covers a range of products including cement, steel, and iron construction materials.
The move comes after Israel blocked Turkey’s attempt to airdrop aid to Gaza, sparking condemnation from Turkish officials. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that reprisals against Israel would be implemented step by step until a ceasefire is declared and humanitarian aid flows into Gaza without interruption.
President Erdogan, known for his strong stance against Israel’s actions in Gaza, labeled Israel a “terrorist state” and pledged continued support for the Palestinian cause. Erdogan’s government faced domestic pressure to sever trade ties with Israel sooner, with recent protests in Istanbul demanding immediate action.
The trade restrictions mark a significant escalation in tensions between Turkey and Israel, ending a period of tentative diplomatic relations. Erdogan’s administration has also called for Israeli leaders to face trial at the International Criminal Court for their role in the conflict.
While Turkey’s exports to Israel have declined in recent years, totaling $5.43 billion last year according to official data, the imposition of trade restrictions signals a decisive shift in Turkey’s approach towards the Gaza crisis.
